ABOUT
BLUE LAGOON FACETING

Precision Cut Sunstones by Blue Lagoon Faceting

Blue Lagoon Faceting is a precision sunstone cutting studio based in Fayetteville, NC with seasonal time spent in Costa Rica. Since 2015, we have specialized in custom faceting and the sale of premium, expertly cut Oregon Sunstones. Every stone we offer is professionally faceted to maximize brilliance, symmetry, and natural color performance. With over a decade of experience in custom cutting Oregon sunstones, we’ve learned that true brilliance takes twice as much time when compared to commercially cut gemstones. Unlike mass-produced stones, each gem we cut is given the attention it deserves — often requiring a full day or two of work to achieve perfect symmetry, maximum sparkle, and polish. Quality vs quantity is our goal.

Our mission is to reveal the full potential of each sunstone through precision cutting, ethical sourcing, and a commitment to craftsmanship.

Blue Lagoon Faceting has been custom cutting sunstones since 2015 and has completed advanced lapidary training at the respected William Holland School of Lapidary Arts in Young Harris, Georgia. This formal training, combined with years of hands-on experience, ensures each stone meets high standards for light return, balance, and finish.

We do not sell unfaceted rough material. Every stone is carefully selected and cut to highlight its natural fire and copper brilliance.

🌊 Our story

On the Pacific shore of Costa Rica, in a small surf town where the ocean meets adventure, two retired teachers — Dan and Kathy — are living their best life. Their journey is one of curiosity, artistry, and a deep love for Oregon sunstones.

✨ A Passion for Oregon Sunstones

Dan’s training began at the William Holland School of Lapidary Arts in Young Harris, Georgia. For over eleven years, he has devoted himself exclusively to Oregon sunstones, cutting nearly a thousand of these rare gems. Each stone is a mystery waiting to be revealed — faceting is, to him, like opening a present on Christmas morning. The final polish uncovers a brilliance and color that no one can predict.

🌄 From Desert to Design

Together, Dan and Kathy travel to the high desert of south‑central Oregon, where Oregon sunstones are found only in a small ten‑mile stretch of land in the world. They’ve endured nights as cold as 30℉ and days as hot as 90℉ in search of sunstones rough. These gems are officially designated the Oregon state gemstone. Sunstones are a variety of gem quality labradorite feldspar. Their microscopic copper inclusions create an aventurescence — a glittering shimmer known as schiller — producing a spectrum of twenty‑five radiant colors.

💎 More Than a Gem

Blue Lagoon Faceting is more than a name; it’s a philosophy. Each sunstone radiates the positive energy of the sun, the adventure of discovery, and the artistry of transformation. As Oregon sunstones gain recognition in the jewelry world, their value and notoriety rise — but for Dan and Kathy, the true treasure lies in sharing their beauty with others. So get something different from the usual gem and obtain yours today.

At Blue Lagoon Faceting, every stone tells a story — of passion, patience, and the magic of light captured in crystal.
